There’s been a lot of hype around belt squats as of late, and for good reason; they work.

For more info, check out 10 Muscle Building Exercises for the Belt Squat Machine.

Here’s a breakdown of why they’re the greatest thing since sliced bread, and what they can do for your training:

  • No upper body
The belt squat totally removes stress on your spine and upper body from the equation, allowing you to just train your lower body. Even a leg press still places a load on your torso, taking the weight off your torso allows you to give your upper body a break, or even work around injuries.
  • Glute activation
The belt squat really emphasizes hip extension resulting in excellent glute activation, which will ensure your buns will be as jacked as your guns.
  • Not just belt squats
The belt squat machine can be used for a variety of exercises, such as rows, Romanian deadlifts, tricep extensions and high pulls, which make the square foot trade-off for the machine a little better.
  • Superior bushings on pivot points for a smooth movement
  • Adjustable band pegs for added dynamic resistance
  • Top and bottom pegs for adding banded resistance
  • 51 inches long, 52″ wide, 40″ tall and the base is 35.5″ wide
  • Includes heavy duty belt with 2 feet of chain and 2 caribeners
  • Adjustable jcups
  • Black powder coating
  • Weigh’s in at a beefy 264lbs and ships unassembled in 2 boxes
  • Made of 60 x 60 mm steel 3mm thick with 8mm connection plates/ 2.3″ x 2.3″ 11 gauge steel with 0 gauge connection plates
  • Optional side of top loaded plate pegs
  • Freestanding standalone unit that does not need to be mounted

So now that you know why the belt squat is so awesome, let me lay down why the Bells of Steel belt squat is your best choice

  • Inexpensive
As of this post, there’s currently only 1 other home gym gade belt squat, for the most part, they’re huge footprint behemoths made with bomb proof steel that sell for thousands of dollars, not ideal for the average garage gym. You also get a belt for squatting, saving you another $100.
  • Innovative design
Band pegs are something we try and slip into a lot of our products, they’re an inexpensive addition and add a lot of versatility to the product. The belt squat is no exception, with 4 adjustable band pegs.  In addition, the connection arm has a thick screw with an eyelet to be a secure & reliable attachment point for your belt squat belt.
  • Bushings for a smoother ride
Using 6 bushings, 4 on the primary pivot point, 2 on the safety, allows for much smoother motion, as well as substantially more durable and safer than a simple bolt.

First timer

New to the belt squat, didn’t know these even existed until I ordered one. I’ve been having some lower back issues and not sure of the cause, but figured one area I can try to prevent some issues would be heavy back squats. I’ve used the machine enough to know it is different but in a good way. I’ll still throw in lighter weight barbell squats but for heavier use the belt machine will be my go to. Fast service

Belt squat review and Some Recommendations for Improvement

I have owned my belt squat for over a year now and my power-lifters have used it a ton so I feel I have enough experience with this piece of equipment to write a solid review and offer some suggestions for improvement. The Pro's The belt squat is very solid, I have used several models from different companies and it is one heavy duty piece of equipment, so if you'r on the fence about buying it and you'r worried about how sturdy and well built it is, its extremely solid. When it arrives at your house you will need two people to make it an easy build, one can do it but two is the way to go. One of my lifters and I finished in an hour. This machine can hold a ton of weight, the lever itself weighs 31-32 pounds, so you should take that into account. it was weighed in my garage with a big game scale and it feels every bit of a 1:1 ratio compared to what would be on a barbell. The ability to put the weight horns straight up is something no other lever belt squat has and for those who train with specialty bars and bands as we do, this machine is a good transition if you want to continue to use those tools while de-loading the spine. Some Improvements I would suggest If they are Possible: The Paint, it does chip and rust easily on the lever arm, especially if you forget to wipe off any sweat beads that fall on the platform of the lever arm. For those who live in areas near the ocean, like I am, where there is a lot of salt in the air the chance of rust happening is higher. There is no way around that and in no way a deal breaker for me, just a little more up-keep but if there is a better paint that would not chip and rust so easily I would suggest that for this machine. I repainted mine with some Rustoleum and it has held up fine. Extending the length of the lever arm and the cut out in the platform by a few inches, this would help a lot with the forward knee travel and the forward pull that the lever causes. Im just basing my observation on this based off the wenning belt squat, the machines are very similar but theirs does seem to have a longer lever arm to address this issue and make the squat more natural. Extending the length and width of the platform a few inches each way, this would help facilitate those who are taller and squat wider and would allow their foot to sit fully on the platform without some of the foot hanging off the edge. Also, extending the length would allow lifters to set a box on the platform for belt box squats without part of the box hanging off. Overall, this is a great machine, I use it weekly and anyone looking to add a belt squat to their garage gym should buy it.

A nice add for my home gym

Very good and very happy with my purchase. Strange feeling at first but definitely a must for a guy like me who have chronic lower back problem. Even at 6'5'', it work pretty well even if I found the handle bar a bit in the way. When I squat very low, I'm limited by the handlebar who touch my my armpit when I squat hand free from the handle bar. I think a kind of "u" shape for the handle bar would be very practical to accommodate all size of person. Just have to flip it to have it closer or further a way of the chest. Delivery was fast. As for the quality, this thing will still work long after I pass away... 😉

Hey Nils Thank you for the review. A belt squat is an amazing piece for anyone who is suffering from back pain. I'll also let product development know the issues and the U shaped handle bar, but another option if the bar keeps getting in the way is to lean back and treat it as a pendulum squat, I find this a great way to hit the legs. Enjoy the gainz! Yours in strength, William & the BOS crew

Great addition to the home gym. A++

Ordered the belt squat and received in within a week or so. Spin recieving the back plate was not functional bc a screw would not go in to complete set up. I contacted Bells and was asked for pictures which I provided. Was immediately sent out the replacement back plate with additional screws as well. The customer service was top notch and very involved during the purchase and replacement part process. I really appreciated the fact that emails were sent in a timely manner. Now the belt squat, very well made and sturdy. This things built like a tank! I loaded up a few plates and started getting to work. It’s so easy on the back and smooth when squatting. Am interested in testing it out with deadlifts as well. But over solid pick up for the home gym and would highly recommend Bells of Steele.
